How to Survive a Hectic Fall – For the Adults

Fall is certainly one of the busiest times of the year for kids, as they begin another school year. Their fuller schedules can directly make your August and September busier as well, and there’s a good chance you end up working a lot more than usual.

With dwindling motivation to keep up appearances for swimsuits and a restocked break room, physical fitness and diet can suffer in these busy times. This isn’t a column about ways to find time for the gym, but rather, a few helpful tips for things you can do while you’re working that will keep you from having to come pay us a visit here at the Clinic.

For those that have sedentary jobs, listen up! More and more research is being conducted that shows just how unhealthy it is to sit for 8 hours a day. Now, I know you can’t just ignore your duties at work to go run a 10k in the middle of the day; but you’d be surprised at how doing little things throughout the day not only help keep your waistline smaller, but reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer (via Vox.com). You also burn 50 less calories per hour when sitting down.

So, throughout the day, try these habits on for size:
• Try a stand-up desk. You don’t have to stand up the whole time, but try to at least stand and work for 15 minutes of every hour.
• Maybe your office layout wouldn’t really support a stand-up desk. Find reasons to get up and walk a little, every 20-25 minutes. Whether it’s to throw something away, or ask Jim how his weekend was.
• Drink lots of water! Aside from the obvious benefits of drinking water, you’ll have to use the bathroom more frequently, thus giving you a reason to stand up and walk around every now and then.
• Don’t eat lunch at your desk, or in the break room. If your office has multiple floors, try to pick a lunch spot that requires you to walk up or down some stairs. Or, if it’s nice outside and your lunch is easy to eat, try a walking lunch!
• When you finally get to go home at the end of the day, park your car in the garage and then walk to the mailbox to get the mail. Or if you have a pet, don’t just let them out in the backyard, but take them on a walk.

We here at the Clinic on Sixth hope you’ve found these tips to be helpful and that you have a productive and healthy fall! Feel free to contact us or come in with any questions or concerns you have. We are here to serve you and your family.
