How To Survive Another Hectic Fall

Do you hear that loud, wooshing sound?

No, not the sound of your AC powering through another humid Alabama summer. I’m talking about the sound of another summer flying by. It’s that time of year again, when we flip through the calendars on our phones, thinking that surely there must be a month missing. But it’s true, once again it is the time of lines: the checkout line for school supplies, the car rider line at 7:30 a.m., kids standing in line in the hallways of school.

As summer gives way to fall, avoid waiting in one more line – the one at the pharmacy. Over the course of the next few weeks, we’re going to share some tips for surviving the start of a new school year.

Eat meals together as a family. Now, this isn’t going to cure the common cold, or relieve your migraine, but you’d be surprised how much better your family feels – as a unit- when you eat together. In a recent article for The Atlantic, Cody C. Delistraty discusses the many nutritional and psychological benefits to eating together. He cites several studies showing that children eat healthier and are less likely to be overweight when they sit down to a meal at the dinner table, rather than going through the drive-thru.

I know what you’re thinking: but who has the time or energy to cook multiple meals a week? Get everyone involved in the cooking! If one spouse is Rachel Ray or Bobby Flay, encourage the less talented one to find a recipe he/she wants to try. Get the kids in on the action. If you’ve got a teenager, cooking is a great way to help them mature.
